PTO Gearbox – Reduction gearbox for driving hydraulic pumps
PTO gearboxes are specialized reduction gearboxes that optimally adapt the power take-off performance of tractors, Unimogs, or other carrier vehicles to the requirements of hydraulic pumps. Learn more...
17 to 22 (from a total of 22)
Through precise speed and torque conversion – often with a gear ratio of 1:3.8 – they enable the efficient operation of powerful hydraulic systems even at low input speeds. Thanks to their robust construction from aluminum or cast iron and high-quality steel gears, PTO gearboxes are characterized by high load capacity, durability, and versatility. They are used in agriculture, mechanical engineering, construction, and industrial hydraulic systems.
PTO Gearboxes – Frequently Asked Questions
What is a PTO gearbox and what is it used for?
A PTO gearbox (also called a hydraulic reduction gearbox) is an interface between the power take-off shaft of a carrier vehicle (e.g. tractor, Unimog) and a hydraulic attachment. It adjusts speed and torque by converting, for example, the typical PTO speed of 540 rpm to the speed required for hydraulic pumps (e.g. 2040 rpm).
What sizes of PTO gearboxes are available and what power can they transmit?
- BG2: For hydraulic pumps up to approx. 25 cm³/rev, power up to about 10 kW
- BG3: For hydraulic pumps up to approx. 60 cm³/rev, power from 20 kW upwards
- Special cast iron models can also transmit higher power
How does the PTO rotation direction affect the selection of a gearbox and pump?
PTO gearboxes reverse the rotation direction via a spur gear stage. Therefore, the hydraulic pump must be selected to match the PTO:
- Rear PTO (clockwise when viewed from behind) → right-hand rotation hydraulic pump
- Front PTO (counterclockwise when viewed from the front) → left-hand rotation hydraulic pump
Our gearboxes can be combined with right- and left-hand rotation pumps.
Which oil is used for PTO gearboxes and how is the oil level checked?
PTO gearboxes are filled with gear oil (e.g. SAE 90), not hydraulic oil. The oil level should reach the middle of the sight glass. Overfilling can cause leaks.
What materials are typically used for PTO gearboxes?
- Housing: Aluminum for low weight & corrosion protection
- Gears: Steel for high strength
- Seals & Bearings: High-quality materials for long service life
In which areas are PTO gearboxes used?
- Agriculture (tractors, forestry machines)
- Construction (cranes, excavators, construction machinery)
- Industry (stationary hydraulic systems, presses)
- Vehicle technology (brake and steering systems, lifts)
Our gearboxes are successfully used in all these areas and are compatible with standard pumps from leading manufacturers.
What are the advantages of PTO gearboxes?
- Adjustment of speed & torque
- Compact design & high power density
- Low maintenance requirements
- Long service life with proper maintenance
- Flexible installation (flange or sliding coupling)
- Operation of auxiliary equipment with its own hydraulic system
What should I consider when selecting a PTO gearbox?
- Pump power requirement: displacement, pressure, power
- Size: BG2 or BG3 depending on requirements
- Rotation direction: right-hand or left-hand
- Gear ratio: e.g. 1:3.8
- Material & application: aluminum or cast iron
- Connection dimensions & shaft designs: e.g. 1 3/8'' stub, hollow shaft, SAE or European standard
Our PTO gearboxes offer compatible connection dimensions in all sizes, making them a cost-effective and robust alternative to other manufacturers.
